Pre-game:
I win the roll and place the first objective face down just outside area terrain in one deployment zone. Josh places one in the middle of the table in some trees. I place one about 12" from the first one I placed just outside some trees. Josh placed the 2nd one behind the hill in the center of the board. I placed my last one in some trees by the others I have placed and Josh placed his last one on the same table half by the ones I placed. I end up winning the roll to go first and deployed in the table half with the most objective markers. I deploy a unit of wraiths and warriors on or as close to an objective as possible while keeping the warriors in cover for the added save. Annihilation barges deploy center of the table for range and targets. My Immortal unit remains embarked on their Nightscythe. Josh's deployment is straight forward. Firewarriors and broadsides with the Shas'El all the way back for the most turns of shooting. Shrike and a Tactical squad deploy behind the hill out of line of site. Night fight is rolled for turn 1 and we wish each other good luck and the dice start rolling. We flip the objectives over to reveal what they are worth. Both warlord traits are not very important in this game.
Wraiths are scoring. Good luck, Josh.
Necron turn 1:
I start the turn holding objectives worth 4, 3, and 1. I move the center unit of wraiths up and surround the objective as well as move the annihilation barges up as well. I end my turn one with 10 points in objectives. Josh has a lot of catching up to do already.
Marines turn 1:
Drop pod 1 comes in with a tactical squad with lascannon behind my annihilation barges and 2 wraith squads and in front of one of my warrior squads. The drop pod squad opens fire on my small unit of warriors and 3 of them go down and one stands back up at the end of the phase. The broadsides take aim at one of my barges and he fails to hit with both TL railguns.
Whats behind the hill? Come and play with us, Shrike.
Necron turn 2:
Both fliers come in. I move my center wraith unit up to the base of the hill and am just outside charge range of Shrike. The embarked immortal squad runs up the center and fires on Shrike and his squad killing one marine. The other runs up my left flank and fires on the firewarriors killing two, I think. The annihilation barges fire at the Shas'El and put 2 wounds on him and one of the tesla destructors arcs to the broadsides which fail to wound. All 3 units of warriors are in range to fire on the tac squad that droped into my deployment zone and I think I killed 3 of them before a unit of wraiths assaulted them and killed all.
Marines turn 2:
Josh's dreadnaught fails to come in from reserve and his veteran squad deep strikes right next to his drop pod behind the wraith unit that just won a combat. The storm talon comes in to play chicken with one of my nightscythes. Shrike and the other tac squad move on top of the hill and prepare for an assault on a wraith squad in the center. Shrike and his squad put a wound onto the wraiths and then make the assault. Whip coils take effect and I kill all the marines except Shrike and the chaplain, while the attacks back put another wound onto a different wraith. He fails his leadership and gets away. Wraiths consolidate back to the objective. The storm talon fires the assault cannon and skyhammer missles at the nightscythe and fail to penetrate the armor of the empty transport. The broadsides fire at one barge and it finally goes up in flames.
Storm Talon playing chicken with a Nightscythe.
Vanguard Vets think they have a chance.
Necron turn 3:
The wraith unit surrounds the vet squad for the feast. My 2 warrior squads in range of the vets end up taking out 2 of the 5 and my wraith unit whipped them out in the assault phase. The immortals drop from the nightscythe right in front of Shrike and the chaplain and next to the storm talon. Wraiths move up to engage Shrike and the chaplain but will be out of charge range. I move the other nightscythe up to attempt to finish off the Shas'El and the firewaorriors. I have yet to move the wraith unit and the warrior unit on my right flank who are sitting on an objective worth 4 points. Instead of shooting Shrike with the immortal squad I chose to take out the storm talon. 10 immortals in rapid fire range and 8 shots from 2 voltic staffs which have haywire only manage 2 glances and both were negated due to the talon evading. One nightscythe shot the talon and failed to penetrate the armor and the other fired into the firewarriors killing 2 more and they flee after failing their leadership. My barge failed to wound the Shas'El.
Marines turn 3:
The dreadnaught comes in right on top of my right flank and wraiths are waiting to engage. Shrike and the chaplain move over to contest the objective in the woods on the left. Firewarriors rally. The storm talon moves over to support the dreadnaught. The dreadnaught fails to hit the wraiths with his TL lascannons however the storm talon wounds one wraith.
Necron turn 4:
Clean up time. Wraiths on the right get the charge on the dreadnaught and wreck it with rending before he can attack back. The 3 squads of warriors take out the drop pod with shooting. The wraiths on the left move up as well as the ones in the center. Both get the charge on the chaplain and Shrike. Both space marines go down to the wraiths this turn and the only thing Josh has is the Tau allies.
Wrap up:
I take 19/20 battle points and get a bonus point for playing a champion of the rival club for a total of 20 battle points. Josh had a rough game and I knew with the mission being hammer and anvil with my wraiths being scoring units as well was going to be an uphill battle for a lot of people. The objective placement was key for me as well not having to move more then a few inches and having 4 of the 6 objectives meant I could sit and wait for him to come to me and then counter. Next up is game 2 verses Deamons.
