A long time in the making

The ancient machines rise from their tomb worlds once again.  What brought me to picking up the Necrons for Warhammer 40k started a long time ago.  I started playing table top war games in 1992.  Wow, i'm getting old.  I played Warhammer Fantasy Battles with a few of my friends from high school.  We pretty much played every weekend and we would call ourselves the weekend warriors.  I started with a Chaos army and quickly found my niche with the Vampire Counts and my fascination with the undying armies began.  What is not to like about an army that will not die and when they do they come back.  I remember having more skeletons than most cemeteries.  When the Tomb Kings split from the Vampire Counts book I made the switch because of the relationship with the Egyptian lore.  Again, more skeletons that wouldn't die.

When I decided to start playing 40k, I wanted to do something different.  I think it was in 2006 when I made the switch and really loved the Necron models but was a little tired of the undead type army.  I went with Tau.  They had big guns, cool looking models, and I had no idea how to play them.  This army was fun to play and I played in some local tournaments and kept placing in the middle of the field.  Winning doesn't matter to me as long as I have fun playing.  When I started reading the Horus Heresy series I immediately started a Chaos Space Marine army and painted them somewhat like the Luna Wolves.  I took this army to my first 40k GT in Chicago 2008.  I got stomped in 3 of my 5 games.  Needless to say this was not your average local tournament.

I took a break from the game when my son was 2.  In 2011 my son discovered my vast collection of miniatures and wanted to play with everything.  I started playing again and when the Necron codex came out in November last year I decided to finally get them.  I have not been disappointed with the codex.  Of the 3 armies I have, this one has the most flexibility, durability, and it is very fun to play.

With 20+ years of gaming experience, I am still looking for my first overall tournament win.  I haven't been a serious tournament player until I picked the Necrons up.  I always liked playing in tournaments to meet cool people, play armies I normally don't play against, and see some awesome painted models.  I have done this at every tournament I have played in and the only award I haven't taken home is best general and best overall.  I have won best sportsman and best painted at a few local tournaments and I want to continue to do so.  My goal by the end of 2013 is to win a major event like Midwest Massacre, Bugeater GT, or Adepticon.
